DOC Employment Preparation Programming
Employer Resources
Workforce Development Coordinator : Contact Person – Charles Botts, III. [email protected]. Work # 860-692-6884. The Workforce Development Coordinator will develop, refine and execute a strategic vision of workforce development for incarcerated people reentering CT’s workforce. The Coordinator will be outreaching to Businesses, Workforce Development Boards, Chambers of Commerce, Business and Industry Groups.
Inmate Furlough Programming : Inmates in 3 facilities are working at manufacturing operations at three Pursuit Aerospace plants in Ashford, Manchester and Plainville. Inmates are also at manufacturing operations at Boat Works in South Windsor and Telling Industries in Windsor.
Reentry Employment Advisory Committee : Contact Person – Charles Botts, III, Workforce Development Coordinator: [email protected]. Work # 860-692-6884 DOC has established an advisory committee of employers/their associations to align the education and job training programs offered by the Department of Correction with the needs of employers in the community, including, but not limited to:
(1) The vocational education curricula used in DOC.
(2) The types of licenses and certifications that employers are looking for in job applicants.
(3) The availability of apprenticeships for incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals in the community.
(4) The types of products and services that should be offered by correctional industries.
Vocational Village Program
Vocational Village Welcome Center at Carl Robinson Correctional Institution (CRCI) In Enfield : A building has been renovated at CRCI as an “Employment Welcome Center” for the Vocational Village program. This space provides meeting place for employers and other outside agencies to meet with correctional officials, partners and incarcerated individuals. Employer-Specific Credentials
Asphalt Technician : Inmates learn about selection of materials for construction, maintenance and reconstruction of pavements; the various maintenance treatments and conditions under which they should be used and how to identify the various distress types and their causes.
Traffic Flagger : Participants learn proper flagging techniques and the responsibilities of a flagger in a work zone. This course satisfies the ATSSA Flagger Certification curriculum. Satisfactory completion of this course certifies participants for four (4) years and places them on ATSSA’s national registry. A certification card will be mailed to you upon your successful completion of this course.
CT State Community College Course Program

Courses such as: Business, Manufacturing, General Studies, and Human Services. Soft Skills, Resume Writing, Career Development and Awareness are parts of the curricula.
Goodwin University, Trinity/Quinnipiac, Wesleyan, Yale / University of New Haven also do college programming mostly focused on the Liberal Arts.
Vocational Education Programs

Building Trades : Curriculum follows guidelines from the National Center for Construction Education and Research which allows instructors to assess, educate and train individuals in current industry practices with the opportunity to earn valuable micro-credentials including, but not limited to OSHA-10.
Commercial Driver’s License : Curriculum adheres to federal and state guidelines in
preparation for the Learner’s Permit test. Additionally, students receive instruction in areas
such as Healthy Trucking and Map Reading and will receive credentialing in Forklift Operation and OSHA-10.
Computer Coding : In partnership with The Last Mile, the Computer Coding class allows
students to learn web development fundamentals relevant In today’s competitive business
environment. Students also are trained In MERN (MongoDB, Express, Angular and Node) – a
source-available JavaScript software stack for building web sites and web applications.
Cosmetology and Barbering : Following guidelines from the CT Department of Public Health
(DPH), our Cosmetology and Barbering programs are DPH recognized training centers in
which students receive 1500 hours and 900 hours, respectively, with a prescribed amount of theory and practice. Successful students receive an Affidavit of Hours which is housed with the DPH and are eligible to take the Prometric Examination which leads to licensure.
Hospitality : This program is aligned with the national standards set forth by the American
Hotel and Lodging Education Institute and enrolled students have the opportunity to become
credentialed in ServSafe and OSHA-10.
Manufacturing : Our Manufacturing courses follow the CT State Manufacturing Certificate
track with instruction mirroring the experience in the CT Community College System. Students have the opportunity to earn college credits in areas such as Manufacturing Math, Blueprint Reading, Solidworks, and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GDT), to name a few and, upon release, have the opportunity to finish their credentialing at one of the many CT State locations throughout CT. Students will also receive their OSHA-10 credential within this course.
Culinary Arts : Participants in our Culinary Arts program receive training in a laboratory
setting using state of art equipment. Competencies include all facets of the Culinary Arts and students receive the ServSafe credential as well as OSHA-10.
Correctional Enterprises
Embedded in all courses are 21st Century effective employee skills (soft skills, dependability, leadership skills) and work-readiness competencies such as resume writing, financial literacy, conflict resolution using the Career Pathways program aligned with Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment Systems (CASAS), National Standards in Personal Finance Education and National Career Development Guidelines.
